I work on electron emission phenomena and vacuum nanoelectronic devices including free-electron instruments and energy converters. The physics involved is particularly rich because of scale and quantum effects. Much of this work has revolved around optical excitation of carbon nanotubes leading to localized heating and the thermal emission of electrons and photons. For a broader view of the topics I have worked on, please see my publications list.
I studied at Sharif University of Technology (BS, MS), the University of Paris XI-Orsay (DEA), and Stanford University (PhD). I have been at UBC since 2006, where I am a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a principal investigator at the Quantum Matter Institute, and a member of the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory, the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Group, the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems, and Characterization@UBC.
The diagram below summarizes my research and the activities involved in its fundamental and applied aspects. The following links are to some videos: 1, 2, 3.

I currently have the pleasure of working with the following students:
Mokter Mahmud Chowdhury
Mohammadamin Jalili
Titouan Gaborit
A list of past lab members is included here.
This year I will be accepting new graduate students into my program on electron emission and democratizing electron microscopy. If you are interested and your background meets the admission requirements of our graduate programs, you can submit a formal graduate application and indicate my name as one of the several faculty members whom you are interested in working with, and bring this to my attention through a subsequent email. If you would like a preliminary evaluation before submitting a formal application, you would be welcome to email me your CV and a description of your interests and experience relevant to the topic. In your email, please also indicate that you have checked and meet our department’s formal admission requirements. Please note that, due to the large volume of emails, unfortunately I may not be able to reply in all cases where I believe that there will not be a good fit for us to work together. Thank you for understanding.
